Julie Wise, director of King County Elections, told voters on Monday that participation levels are tracking near expectations for the final weekend before Election Day. She stated that officials are seeing promising numbers as operations ramp up in Renton.
Approximately 500,000 ballots have arrived at the county headquarters as of Monday morning. Wise said administrators anticipate overall turnout will reach 75 percent. That figure represents roughly 1.1 million ballots cast across the county.
Voters mailing their ballots must deliver them to a post office rather than a standard mailbox. Wise advised voters to ensure staff postmark the envelope in their presence. Alternatively, residents can use one of 100 official drop boxes located throughout the county. These boxes remain open until 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Wise noted that 99 percent of voters live within a three mile radius of a drop box. She encouraged residents to utilize those locations today and tomorrow. The county also maintains six in-person vote centers for those who need assistance or prefer to cast ballots in person.
Washington National Guard members are serving as a neighborhood watch alongside U.S. Department of Justice and King County election monitors. This arrangement was provided by the governor. Wise said the guards are checking the election system to ensure compliance with federal laws.
Staff verify every signature on a returned ballot envelope against voter registration files before processing. Fewer than 1 percent of ballots in King County and statewide have faced signature challenges as of the latest totals on the Secretary of State website. Voters have three weeks after Election Day to resolve discrepancies online. Wise said the team is prepared to count the votes and ready to see voters.
