Toshisuke Kanazawa stepped onto a stage in Santa Susanna, Spain, on Friday.

The 90-year-old Japanese athlete competed in the masters category for competitors aged 50 and older. He faced rivals who were decades younger than him. The event was organized by the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation.

Kanazawa prepared backstage with a spray tan and warm-up exercises alongside his team. He then performed his poses under the arena lights. He attributes his physical condition to a strict Japanese diet adopted after his 50th birthday. His meals consist of brown rice, natto, and miso soup.

“This is something I’ve been researching and want to learn more about,” Kanazawa said regarding his dietary habits. He noted that he has not experienced illness in 90 years due to this routine.

Kanazawa did not place on the podium at this specific contest. He plans to compete one final time at age 93. He intends to retire from the sport after that appearance. He cited the development of wrinkles as a factor in his decision to eventually stop competing.

“I’m thinking I might give it one more go at 93,” Kanazawa said. “After that, I’ll probably have to retire.” He added that Japanese culture often views wrinkles negatively in older men.

Kanazawa aims to inspire older adults to maintain physical activity. He believes mental determination allows individuals to push through physical limitations. He wants to serve as a role model for others in their later years.

“Once you set your mind to something, you need to develop the mental strength and determination to see it through no matter what,” Kanazawa said. He hopes more people will continue bodybuilding as they age.
