Manchester City escaped a potential upset at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, beating Brighton 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the fourth round of the League Cup. The result keeps City in contention to win the competition for a third consecutive year, though the path was far from smooth.
The match ended in a dead heat after 90 minutes. Brighton took the lead in the 30th minute when Malick Yalcouye tapped in a rebound from five yards. Mateo Kovacic restored parity in the 50th minute with a shot that curled into the far corner from 25 yards out. Georginio Rutter gave Brighton the lead again shortly after the restart, finishing a cut-back from Jaouen Hadjam. Rayan Cherki equalized for City in the 72nd minute, his free kick deflecting off Vitor Reis and into the net.
Manager Enzo Maresca made nine changes to the starting lineup following City's loss to Aston Villa on Saturday. Those changes ended the club's perfect start to the Premier League season. Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Elliot Anderson, and Gianluigi Donnarumma all sat on the bench. Geronimo Rulli started in goal for the first time this season.
The tension peaked during the penalty shootout. Jason Steele, Brighton's goalkeeper, saved Kovacic's kick to give Brighton a 3-2 lead. The momentum shifted when Rulli stopped Yasin Ayari's attempt. He then saved Lewis Dunk's kick to seal the 4-3 victory for the home side. City now advance to face third-tier Bradford City in the quarterfinals.
Other results on the night saw Bournemouth continue their strong form. The team won 3-0 against Aston Villa at the Vitality Stadium. This victory followed their 3-0 wins against AC Milan and Manchester United in recent weeks. Crystal Palace also secured a spot in the last eight, beating Fulham 1-0 to ease pressure on manager Pierre Sage. They will host Sunderland, who defeated Brentford 3-2.
Lower-division side Fleetwood Town reached the quarterfinals by defeating Premier League champions Arsenal in a penalty shootout on Tuesday. The fourth-tier club will play the winner of the upcoming match between Everton and Newcastle. The quarterfinal draw pairs Fleetwood with Everton or Newcastle, City with Bradford, Palace with Sunderland, and Liverpool with Bournemouth.
