Residents in Fargo who have survived a stroke can access a regular support network at Essentia Health. The hospital holds these meetings on the last Thursday of every month from 3 to 4 p.m. Participants use the hour to share personal experiences, hear from guest speakers, and engage in social games like bingo.

Lori Aakre, who suffered a stroke more than three years ago, joined the group about six months after her initial recovery. She describes the meetings as essential to her current routine. Aakre’s condition began with visual disturbances, specifically black and gray streaks in one eye. Medical staff at a walk-in clinic identified the symptoms immediately and sent her to the hospital. She spent three days in the hospital before returning home with facial drooping, speech difficulties, and the need for a walker.

The support group focuses on both education and community building. Facilitators demonstrate rehabilitation exercises and invite outside speakers to address specific aspects of recovery. Members also participate in game nights, which provide a social outlet distinct from the clinical aspects of treatment. Aakre has used this time to regain her ability to crochet. She now creates small dog figurines to give as gifts to other attendees.

Keith Aakre, Lori’s husband, emphasizes the importance of seeking medical care quickly when symptoms appear. He advises anyone noticing unusual signs to visit a doctor without hesitation. The Aakres suggest that the combination of peer support and practical advice helps members manage the long-term effects of their strokes.

Essentia Health opened the group to survivors and their loved ones to create a consistent space for shared learning. The meetings occur on a predictable monthly schedule, allowing participants to plan their attendance. Information about joining the group is available through the hospital’s public channels.
