Families in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia are using Halloween to find moments of celebration outside the routine of medical care. The annual event allows parents to dress their infants in costumes, creating a break from the constant focus on procedures and appointments.

Liz Jung, whose daughter Nellie was born in March, described the opportunity as a meaningful shift in perspective. For NICU parents, calendars are typically dominated by dates for surgeries and doctor visits. Jung noted that having a festive event on the schedule provides a welcome change from the clinical environment.

Nellie was not born prematurely but has required four surgeries since birth. These procedures included airway reconstruction and open-chest surgery. Jung explained that her daughter relied on a ventilator until April, when she underwent a major airway operation. She has been in recovery since that time.

The coming weekend will be Nellie's first Halloween. The hospital organizes this celebration each year to help families feel connected to the wider community while they are confined to the unit. Jung said the event allows parents to feel part of the world outside the hospital walls, even if they cannot interact with it directly.

For other patients, the timing of the event offers a different kind of hope. Penelope, another infant in the unit, is scheduled for discharge this weekend. She will be able to spend Halloween at home with her older sister, marking a transition from hospital life back to family routines.
