Nikita Kucherov has told the Tampa Bay Lightning he is not re-signing with the club and has requested a trade, a move that ends the tenure of the team’s defining offensive asset. The 33-year-old center, who holds the Hart Trophy for the 2025-26 season, informed management of his decision on Friday. A source familiar with the private discussions told The Associated Press that Kucherov has concluded his time in Tampa Bay.

The financial terms of Kucherov’s current eight-year, $76 million contract, signed in 2018, are about to expire. He enters unrestricted free agency following the conclusion of this season. While the Lightning had aimed to lock him in for the long term, the negotiations between general manager Julien BriseBois and agent Dan Milstein did not reach a final agreement. BriseBois expressed confidence in September that Kucherov would remain an elite performer into his late thirties, noting that both parties preferred a settled deal to avoid ongoing uncertainty.

Kucherov’s statistical output has placed him among the league’s historical elite. Since his 2013 debut, he has recorded 1,139 points in 891 regular-season games, ranking third in the NHL behind Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. His playoff record of 177 points is the highest in the same period. Last weekend, he surpassed former captain Steven Stamkos to become the franchise’s all-time points leader. Through 12 games this season, he has contributed 15 points, including four goals and 11 assists.

The departure marks the latest high-profile trade request in a recent wave of player movement. Brady Tkachuk moved from Ottawa to Florida, while Connor Hellebuyck shifted from Winnipeg to New Jersey. Dylan Larkin remains in a state of uncertainty with Detroit. Unlike those players, Kucherov has no remaining contract years, which creates immediate financial and strategic pressure on Tampa Bay.

The Lightning have maintained a high level of competitive stability under Kucherov’s leadership. The team has qualified for the playoffs 12 times in 13 seasons. They have advanced to the conference finals four times, a run supported by a core that included Victor Hedman, Andrei Vasilevskiy, and Brayden Point. Despite this history, the team has been eliminated in the first round in each of the past four years.

General manager Julien BriseBois praised Kucherov’s status at his training camp opening last month. He described Kucherov as a historically great player and arguably the best in the world. The Lightning did not immediately return a message seeking comment on the development. Sportsnet was the first outlet to report the news.
