Tampa Bay Lightning fans and the rest of the National Hockey League received a shock on Friday when Nikita Kucherov informed the organization he will not re-sign his contract. The 33-year-old center also asked to be traded to another club. A person with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press that the talks are private, which is why the source spoke on condition of anonymity.
Kucherov is entering the final year of an eight-year deal worth $76 million that he signed in 2018. When that contract expires after this season, he will become an unrestricted free agent. This status allows him to sign with any team without needing approval from Tampa Bay, a situation that gives the Lightning less leverage in negotiations.
The move puts the franchise's long-term planning in jeopardy. General Manager Julien BriseBois had previously stated that the team's goal was to secure a new long-term deal with Kucherov. In mid-September, BriseBois told reporters that he believed Kucherov would remain an elite player well into his 30s. He added that both sides would have preferred to finalize a deal sooner, but they had not been able to do so.
Kucherov is widely considered one of the best players in the league's history. His 1,139 points in 891 regular-season games since 2013 rank third all-time, behind only Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. He also holds the record for the most playoff points during that span with 177. Last weekend, he surpassed Steven Stamkos to become the Lightning's career points leader.
The 2025-26 season marked Kucherov's second win of the Hart Trophy, which is awarded to the league's most valuable player. He has led the NHL in scoring three times. Through the first 12 games of the current season, he has 15 points, placing him second on his team behind Brandon Hagel.
This trade request follows a trend of high-profile players asking to be moved in recent months. Brady Tkachuk went from Ottawa to Florida, and Connor Hellebuyck moved from Winnipeg to New Jersey. Unlike those players, Kucherov has less time left on his current contract. The Lightning have made the playoffs 12 times in the last 13 seasons, largely due to the core built around Kucherov and defenseman Victor Hedman. However, the team has been eliminated in the first round for four consecutive years.
The Lightning have not yet responded to requests for comment on the development. Sportsnet was the first outlet to report the news. For now, Kucherov remains with the team while the trade process unfolds.
