A clear plastic jar of ground cinnamon now sits on store shelves in fourteen states, labeled with a best-before date of April 25, 2027. But the spice inside may carry a heavy metal that lingers in the body. SLR Food Distribution Inc. announced a voluntary recall of Wise Wife Brand Ground Cinnamon on October 30, citing elevated levels of lead.
The recall covers product sold between September 8, 2025, and June 28, 2026. The affected items are 110-gram containers, or 3.88 ounces, with black screw-top caps. The product carried the UPC 0688474302754 on the back label. The recall spans Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The recall alert notes that lead can impact nearly every bodily system. The specific effects depend on the dosage, the duration of exposure, and the age and weight of the individual. Low-level, short-term exposure often produces no immediate symptoms. No illnesses have been reported to date as a result of the potentially contaminated cinnamon.
Consumers are advised not to consume the recalled product. The company directs buyers to throw the jars away or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The recall comes ahead of the holiday season, when cinnamon is a common ingredient in baking and cooking.
