The Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Florida Gators 27-8 on Saturday, claiming the first victory in their historic rivalry played in Atlanta. The matchup moved from its traditional Jacksonville, Florida home to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for this single season. Local residents and visiting fans filled the downtown area on Saturday afternoon, creating a mix of Bulldog red and Gator blue attire.
The change in location stems from renovations at the Jacksonville Jaguars stadium. The game will not return to Jacksonville until 2028. Following this year's edition in Atlanta, the rivalry is scheduled to move to Tampa next year. This shift provides a temporary new venue for a contest that has long been a fixture in college football.
Elijah Barnes, a resident of Buford, Georgia, praised the city's ability to host large gatherings. He noted that the event was convenient and local for many fans. “It’s awesome, there’s a lot of good Florida alumni here,” Barnes said. He highlighted the strong talent coming out of Gainesville and the shared experience of the rivalry.
Barnes pointed to Atlanta's recent infrastructure performance as a positive indicator for future events. “You saw at the World Cup the amount of our police officers, our first responders, the entire city came together to make that happen, so this is a layup for the city,” he said. He identified the venue as a top choice for hosting major sporting events in the United States.
Cindy Spritzer traveled from Lake Oconee, Georgia, by bus with friends to attend the game. She expressed enthusiasm for the event being held in a major metropolitan area rather than the traditional college campuses. “It really makes sense for it to be here, and it’s great for the city,” Spritzer said.
The next meeting between Georgia and Florida is currently planned for Tampa. The teams will continue their annual series, with the location rotating based on stadium availability and contractual agreements for the coming years.
