Rain fell steadily on the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for four hours before Saturday night's game, leaving the field and the stands soaked as USC took on No. 2 Ohio State. The Trojans won 30-18, an upset that preserved their College Football Playoff chances and silenced some of the noise surrounding head coach Lincoln Riley.

The victory was a sharp turnaround for a program that had just suffered a 24-7 loss to Wisconsin one week earlier. That defeat marked the worst offensive performance of Riley's career at USC. Against Ohio State, however, the team played with discipline and efficiency, building a 20-9 halftime lead and holding the Buckeyes scoreless until late in the fourth quarter.

The freshman class played a central role in the win. Wide receiver Trent Mosley accumulated 145 all-purpose yards, while tight end Mark Bowman recorded a 71-yard catch-and-run that included a hurdle and several broken tackles. The offense converted four of its first six drives into scores, while the defense forced a key first-half turnover and limited the Buckeyes on four of five red zone trips.

Despite being outgained by 126 yards and losing the possession battle by nearly 20 minutes, USC was the more efficient team. The Buckeyes were called for 11 penalties, while the Trojans maintained composure. Kicker Ryon Sayeri added a 54-yard field goal in the first half, capping a performance that the sold-out crowd rewarded by storming the field.

Riley acknowledged the weight of the win during his postgame press conference. He noted that the team had to move past the previous week's struggles and that their patience paid off. He expressed confidence in the program's direction, stating that his experience and observation of the team told him they were ready to compete at a high level.

The win also addressed growing questions about Riley's future at the school. Earlier that week, following the loss to Wisconsin, speculation had intensified. Riley responded by affirming his desire to remain at USC and his belief that he was the right person for the job. He said he had plenty of opportunities to leave but chose to stay.

After the game, Riley read a handwritten note aloud to the reporters present. He emphasized that the program was built on internal joy rather than external applause. He dedicated the victory to the staff, players, and administration, reiterating his commitment to the role. He ended the statement by saying he would continue to fight because that is what being a Trojan is all about.
