Harry Kane collected the Ballon d'Or at a ceremony in London on Monday. The 33-year-old England captain accepted the award after finishing the 2025-26 campaign as the most prolific scorer in European football. His victory marks a return of the trophy to an English player for the first time in a quarter century.

Kane's path to the prize followed a shift in his career trajectory. He joined Bayern Munich in 2023 after years at Tottenham Hotspur. That move aligned with a peak in his statistical output. In the 2025-26 season, he recorded 61 goals in 51 appearances for the German club. Bayern also secured the domestic league and cup double during that stretch. His club form translated to international duty, where he scored six goals to lead England to the World Cup semi-finals.

The striker finished the season with a combined total of 73 goals across all competitions. That figure placed him ahead of other top candidates. Kylian Mbappe set new World Cup scoring records during the tournament. Lamine Yamal played a central role in Spain's World Cup victory. Despite their individual feats, voters selected Kane for his consistent performance level throughout the year. He maintained high scoring numbers without extended periods of low activity.

Kane addressed the audience after taking the stage. "Wow, wow, wow!" he said. "I am almost speechless. Being here in London makes it extra special. It feels like a good omen for me tonight. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I can imagine it was tough this year." He noted the quality of his peers, stating there were "some world-class players in the room tonight." He congratulated all winners and nominees present.

The award adds to a record-setting resume for the forward. He is already England's all-time leading scorer and their record World Cup goalscorer. His early career included loan spells at Tottenham, but he developed into a versatile center forward capable of creating chances as well as scoring them. The Ballon d'Or completes a period where his statistical dominance matched his on-field influence.

In the women's division, Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d'Or Féminin. It is her third win in the category. The Spanish midfielder earned the honor after helping Barcelona win a treble and the Spanish Super Cup in 2025-26. Putellas left Barcelona in July after 14 years to join London City Lionesses in the Women's Super League.

The ceremony concluded the individual awards night for the 2025-26 football year. Kane's win caps a season where he led both his club and nation in goal output. His performance metrics provided the basis for the voting process. The award stands as the primary individual recognition in the sport.
