Martha Bennett, the executive director of the Greer Soup Kitchen, was presented with a $2,000 check on Thursday. The funds were delivered by the FOX Carolina Surprise Squad in partnership with United Community. The donation arrives as the organization prepares for the upcoming holiday meal services.

The kitchen in Greenville, South Carolina, operates every day of the year. Bennett stated that more than 100 individuals visit the facility daily, and many of them are experiencing homelessness. The organization can serve up to 150 people in a single day. It does not receive funding from the state or local government. Instead, it relies entirely on contributions from families, churches, and local businesses.

Bennett noted that while demand remains high, financial support has decreased. She explained that the kitchen is currently dependent on donations from residents of Greer and the wider Upstate region. She said, “We’re feeding every day. So those needs are mighty. But it’s all given to us through donations or people throughout Greer and the Upstate, and donations right now are down. We need them big time to keep us going.”

Bennett initially believed she was participating in a standard news interview when the representatives arrived. Upon receiving the check, she expressed gratitude and calculated the immediate impact of the gift. She stated, “Thank you guys so much. This is wonderful news. This helps a lot. This will feed 2,000 people. Really.”

Michelle Seaver, a representative from United Community, described the experience as personal. She said the team was inspired by the work Bennett has done for nearly 18 years. Seaver added, “Everything we heard about Martha and this soup kitchen was just so inspiring, and we just love the idea that we can be a part of it and be a part of her story and help so many people that are in need this holiday season.”

Bennett emphasized that the kitchen aims to provide safety and comfort for one hour each day. She said, “What we do here really matters. If we can just love on them for an hour. If they’re safe for an hour, that’s our goal. We are to be God’s hands and feet. That’s what we do and that’s what we stand on.”

The organization has never turned away a person seeking a meal, according to Bennett. She said, “I’ve been here almost 18 years and we’ve never had to turn anybody away. It’s been close at times, but God just brings it in the door. It’s what he does. You can’t out-give him. So that’s what we rely on.”

The kitchen will continue to serve daily meals while preparing for the Thanksgiving and Christmas periods. Bennett is focused on securing enough resources to ensure every person who sits down for a holiday meal has food available.
