JetBlue Raises Economy Checked Bag Fees to $50 and $55
The airline is increasing ancillary charges for the third time this year as jet fuel costs double following the start of the Iran war.

JetBlue Airways is raising the price of checked bags for most economy passengers. The carrier confirmed new fee structures on Monday, marking the third increase in these specific charges in under 12 months. The adjustments apply to travelers who do not hold elite frequent flyer status or a co-branded JetBlue credit card.
For non-peak travel periods, the fee for the first checked bag will rise to $50 if purchased more than 24 hours before departure. This is a $5 increase from the previous rate of $45. If the fee is paid within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time, the cost jumps to $60.
During peak seasons, including summer and the holiday period, the prices are higher. The first bag fee will be $55 when bought more than 24 hours in advance, up from $49. Passengers paying within 24 hours of departure during these busy times will face a charge of $70.
The airline attributed the price hikes to rising fuel and operating costs. JetBlue stated that the strategy allows it to keep base fares competitive while letting customers pay for luggage only when needed. Fuel is the second largest expense for airlines, behind only labor. Since the Iran war began in February 2026, jet fuel prices have roughly doubled.
Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration showed jet fuel trading at $4.44 per gallon in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico region on Tuesday. This spike in input costs has added billions of dollars in expenses for the industry. The surge has contributed to higher ticket prices for consumers across major carriers.
Historical patterns suggest that when one major airline raises ancillary fees, competitors often follow. Earlier this year, several U.S. airlines increased their bag fees after JetBlue initially raised its rates. The current move may set a new benchmark for the sector. The new fee details were first reported by the Thrifty Traveler blog before JetBlue confirmed the changes.
