Lamar Jackson is out of the game against the Buffalo Bills after suffering a thumb injury on Baltimore's first offensive play of the contest. The two-time MVP was ruled out for the rest of Sunday's action at Highmark Stadium, ending his brief return to the field.
Jackson entered the game with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter, following a quick touchdown by the Bills. On the ensuing first-and-10 snap, he threw a pass to Zay Flowers. His hand made contact with a defender's arm during the throw, and Jackson immediately showed signs of pain. He ran to the sideline and was taken into the locker room by the training staff.
The Ravens are now without their starting quarterback for the remainder of the game. Tyler Huntley, the second-string option, entered the matchup but was also forced out in the second quarter due to a toe injury. Baltimore has turned to Joe Fagnano, an undrafted rookie from UConn. This is the first appearance of Fagnano's professional career.
Jackson's exit follows a three-game absence caused by an ankle injury sustained in Week 4. He sat out nearly a month before returning to the field this week. The injury to his right thumb poses a specific challenge for quarterbacks, as it directly affects their ability to grip the football.
The Ravens' performance has varied sharply with Jackson on the field. During the first four games of the season with him playing, the team went 3-1 and averaged 29.8 points per game. In the three weeks he missed, Baltimore went 1-2 and averaged just 17.7 points per game.
The team faces a difficult schedule ahead. The Ravens are set to play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night in Week 9. While Jackson has been ruled out for Sunday, his status for the Thursday night game remains uncertain given the nature of the injury.
