Seven people were hospitalized after a mass shooting erupted in downtown Bloomington, Indiana, in the early hours of Sunday, Nov. 1.
Bloomington police reported that officers responded to multiple gunshots around 1:30 a.m. The incident took place in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, located between Grant and Dunn streets. This area sits approximately two blocks west of the Indiana University campus.
Deputy Police Chief Ryan Pedigo stated that officers were already monitoring a large crowd near the intersection when the gunfire started. Preliminary reports suggest a disturbance within the group preceded the exchange. Four men and three women, ranging in age from 17 to 27, were confirmed as victims. No deaths had been reported as of the latest updates.
Investigators recovered shell casings of various calibers from the sidewalk near 420 E. Kirkwood Avenue. The presence of different bullet types indicates that more than one firearm may have been involved. Police detained a man carrying a weapon who was seen running northeast from the scene. Officers took him into custody east of Indiana Avenue near Dunn Meadow and located a gun nearby, though they had not yet determined if he was one of the shooters.
The shooting occurred hours after the No. 4 ranked Indiana Hoosiers defeated Minnesota 23-16 in overtime on Saturday, Oct. 31. The team, which holds the NCAA championship title, had overcome special teams errors and a halftime quarterback change to secure the win. Authorities have not established a connection between the football game and the violent incident.
City and university police are currently searching for additional victims who may not have reported their injuries immediately. Detective Chris Scott is leading the investigation and has asked the public to contact him at 812-339-4477 with any information or video footage.
