A localized ceasefire in southern Ukraine is holding as a large humanitarian mission prepares to move supplies into the city of Oleshky. The operation was brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, who led negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian officials. The aid mission is scheduled to begin later on Friday.
Ukraine’s ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets stated that the convoy has been assembled in Armyansk, a town in Russian-occupied territory. The staging area is located approximately 85 kilometers south of Oleshky. The fleet consists of 25 buses, ambulances, and other necessary vehicles for the transport of goods.
Lubinets emphasized that the primary goal is to ensure supplies reach every resident in need. He noted specific focus on the elderly and individuals with disabilities. The city has faced severe shortages of food and medicine due to heavy fighting and mined roads. Residents have been stranded in the area for weeks.
The truce covering Oleshky and its immediate surroundings has been observed since Tuesday. This pause in fighting follows previous ceasefire attempts that often collapsed quickly. The broader war continues, with Russian forces fully engaged in other parts of Ukraine more than four and a half years after the full-scale invasion began.
Yana Lantratova, the Russian counterpart to Lubinets, participated in the talks with First Lady Trump. The diplomatic effort aimed to create a safe corridor for the humanitarian effort. The success of the Friday mission will test the durability of the current local truce.
