Alicia Silverstone is reprising her role as Cher Horowitz in a new sequel series for Paramount+.
The project officially landed at the streaming platform after a period of development uncertainty. In early 2026, Peacock ended its own planned version of the follow-up. Following that cancellation, CBS Studios and Paramount continued to seek a home for the script. They eventually secured a green light from Paramount+ for the event series. This move replaces previous, stalled efforts in the franchise, including a reboot centered on the character Dionne and a live-action television adaptation that ran from 1996 to 1999.
The new story is set three decades after the events of the 1995 film. It follows Cher as a successful businesswoman who is balancing her career with raising a teenage daughter. Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original movie, is returning as an executive producer. She will work alongside original producer Robert Lawrence. Silverstone is also serving as an executive producer on the show.
Production is scheduled to start in Los Angeles in 2027. The cast currently includes only Silverstone. Paramount+ has not announced if Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, or other members of the original ensemble will return. The 1995 film, which was loosely based on Jane Austen's Emma, became a cultural favorite for its dialogue and fashion. Silverstone stated that the goal is to honor what audiences love about the original while introducing a new chapter for viewers.
