Comedian Chris Rock identified infidelity and excessive pornography consumption as primary factors in the collapse of his 18-year marriage to Malaak Compton-Rock.
In an interview with GQ for its 2026 Men of the Year issue, the 61-year-old acknowledged that he made several errors during the relationship, including failing to listen and not treating his wife with kindness. Rock stated plainly, "I was not a great husband." He also revealed that his consumption of pornography played a role in the relationship's breakdown, noting that he quit the habit five or six years ago and has not returned to it.
Rock did not attempt to justify his behavior, describing the period as something he had to go through rather than a source of pride. He compared his experience to a superhero who is carried away while discovering new abilities. According to Rock, some individuals must make mistakes and face consequences to realize they are not invincible. He told the magazine, "I tested my powers. I definitely realized I wasn't God or anywhere near him, and I was severely humbled, as I should have been."
Rock and Compton-Rock married in 1996 and share two daughters, Lola and Zahra. The couple announced their separation in December 2014, and their divorce was finalized in 2016. Compton-Rock described the decision as one reached after much contemplation. Despite the divorce, the former spouses have continued to participate in major family events together. In May, they reunited to celebrate Zahra's graduation from the University of Southern California.
Since the split, Rock has been in several relationships. He dated actress Megalyn Echikunwoke for several years and was linked to Carmen Ejogo and Lake Bell. He began a relationship with Simone Henault in March. Rock continues to work in comedy and film, but his recent comments provide a detailed account of the personal mistakes he says forced him to reconsider his approach to relationships.
