Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans watched their team win 16-0 on Sunday, an outcome that required a historic level of defensive dominance. The Bucs became the first NFL team since 1974 to secure a victory without completing a single forward pass. The result leaves both teams at 3-5, but the method of the win stands out in the modern era.

The game featured a personal struggle for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Penix, who grew up in Dade City and attended high school in Tampa, threw four interceptions in the rain. He completed 8 of 24 passes for 125 yards. The final turnover occurred in Bucs territory when Atlanta still had a chance to score, effectively ending the game.

Tampa Bay’s offense relied entirely on its ground game, rushing for a team-record 324 yards. The defense forced turnovers on both sides of the ball. Linebacker Alex Anzalone intercepted two of Penix’s first six passes. Cornerbacks Jacob Parrish and Zyon McCollum recorded the other two picks.

Atlanta’s passing attack stalled late in the fourth quarter. Jahan Dotson caught a pass and ran it to the Buccaneers 22-yard line. On the next play, Drake London caught a pass, but the drive died when Penix threw three consecutive incompletions from the 14-yard line. The ball turnover on downs left the Falcons without a final opportunity to score.

Penix acknowledged the pain of the performance, noting that he had a lot of family in the stands. He said the performance was one he had never had in his life. Penix refused to blame the heavy rain, stating that both teams had to play in the conditions and that a leader must protect the ball.

Coach Kevin Stefanski said he had no major concerns about Penix moving forward. He noted that the team could do a better job, but he did not use the weather as an excuse. Penix vowed to put his head down and keep working. Atlanta travels to Madrid next Sunday to play Cincinnati.
