Streaming services are competing for viewer attention this month by releasing a slate of high-profile titles that mix holiday entertainment with serious awards-season candidates. The strategy aims to capture audiences as the weather cools and the holiday season begins.

Netflix is leading the charge with a diverse lineup. The platform will host Chris Rock’s “Misty Green” on Nov. 9, a film that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Rosalind Eleazar stars in the movie, which has already generated buzz for potential Oscar recognition. Netflix is also releasing “Possible Love” on Nov. 6, a drama that won the grand jury prize at the Venice Film Festival. The film stars Jeon Do-yeon and Sul Kyung-gu and is considered a strong contender for a best international film nomination. Additionally, “Gentle Monster” arrives on Nov. 18, featuring Lea Seydoux in a role that Netflix hopes will become an awards contender.

HBO Max is positioning its releases around the Thanksgiving holiday. The platform will stream “Tony,” a biopic about Anthony Bourdain, on Nov. 20. Dominic Sessa stars in the film, which earned nearly $20 million at the global box office during the summer. The release date places the movie directly before the Thanksgiving break, aiming to capitalize on increased viewership during the holiday period.

Peacock and Apple TV are also entering the competition with notable titles. Peacock will offer “The Uprising” on Nov. 6, a historical thriller starring Andrew Garfield that saw a modest box office performance earlier this fall. Apple TV releases “Being Heumann” on Nov. 13, a drama written and directed by Sian Heder. The film is adapted from a memoir and follows an activist who leads a protest involving over 100 disabled people. Heder’s previous film, “CODA,” sold to Apple for $25 million before winning the best picture Oscar.

The market for streaming content in November reflects a dual focus on immediate engagement and long-term prestige. Studios are leveraging established talent and award-winning material to secure viewer commitment. For example, “The Mosquito Bowl,” a war drama directed by Peter Berg, is set for release on Netflix on Nov. 25. The film stars Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård and is positioned as a major original offering for the Thanksgiving weekend.

Other platforms are filling out their calendars with a mix of genres. Hulu will release “Super Troopers 3” on Nov. 5 and “Couture” on Nov. 27. The latter stars Angelina Jolie in a dual role as a director and a mother dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Prime Video adds to the slate with “Madden,” a sports drama directed by David O. Russell, scheduled for Nov. 18. The film stars Nicolas Cage as the football coach and features Christian Bale as Al Davis. This breadth of content ensures that major streaming services have multiple high-profile releases to anchor their monthly programming.
